KMG staff and supporters gather after the Durame Sensitization Workshop
in September, 1999. The KMG staff now numbers 37, not including a
large number of community-based, volunteer health workers who operate
in neighboring town and villages. |
KEMBATTI MENTTI GEZZIMA-TOPE empowers Kembatta women
and their communities and supports their right to be free of harmful
customary practices and other forms of abuse. In Kembatta as in
other rural regions, social turmoil, environmental degradation
and loss of the traditional income base all reinforce attitudes
which victimize women. To combat this trend KMG emphasizes three
inter-related programs to help women and their families help themselves.
• Health Reproductive health education, including elimination of female
genital
excision (FGE) and HIV/AIDS prevention
• Livelihood Vocational training and advancement of women’s entrepreneurial
skills
• Environment Restoring depleted watersheds and damaged ecologies

KMG operates from two cities in Ethiopia.
Direct services are provided primarily from the KMG Center near
its target population in the regional city of Durame. (Click
here for map of Ethiopia.) Because
communications and power sources are unreliable or non-existent
in some areas of the KAT Zone, KMG maintains its administrative
office in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Abeba.
KMG currently has a staff of about 30. This small staff is supplemented by
several hundred civic organizers and health workers working in distant towns
and villages throughout the region. They are graduates of KMG programs that
give highly recommended candidates skills and materials they need to return
to their villages to develop community-specific programs in partnership with
their own schools, churches, mosques and other institutions throughout the
region.
